As of May 26,
2002, North Beach neighbors and fans of the Panelli
Deli have to look elsewhere for their Segafredo espresso and paper-thin
prosciutto. The Panelli twins, Richard and Robert, decided to close the
family deli after more than 80 years. Opened by the Panellis' father, Ernesto,
and uncle, Edigio, on Grant Avenue before the Great Depression, the deli
eventually settled here, at 1419 Stockton Street. When the impending closure
was announced, not for economic reasons but due to the Panellis' own fatigue,
a shock ran through the neighborhood as suddenly North Beach became decidedly
less Italian.
Less than a year later in March, 2003, the Florence Deli and Ravioli Factory, a 67 year-old neighborhood institution across the street at 1412 Stockton Street, also went out of business. Detail |
