Farewell Favorites: Florence Deli and Ravioli Factory
As of May 26, 2002, North Beach neighbors and fans of the Panelli Deli have to look elsewhere for their Segafredo espresso and paper-thin prosciutto. Opened by the Panellis' father, Ernesto, and uncle, Edigio, on Grant Avenue before the Great Depression, the deli eventually settled here, at 1419 Stockton Street. When the impending closure was announced, not for economic reasons but due to the Panellis' own fatigue, a shock ran through the neighborhood as suddenly North Beach became decidedly less Italian.
