The San Franciscans: Smiley
Union Square shoppers know when Smiley smiles the whole world smiles with him. Since the early 1990s, Smiley (aka Jerry McLilly) has entertained a cappella in front of Saks Fifth Avenue at Post and Powell. He may be wearing one of his 120 remarkable suits but, as the saying goes, you're never fully dressed without a smile. The popular street performer throws in a little of the old soft shoe, too. So when you hear a passerby singing, "When You're Smiling" in the vicinity of Union Square (and you will) you'll know they've been near Saks, for Smiley's tuneful and optimistic attitude is infectious around here.
