New and Venerable Institutions: District Supervisors

D-10 Supervisor Sophie Maxwell

With the 2001 installation of City legislators elected by district, power to the people is in reach for San Franciscans. Sophie Maxwell, shown here, is one of eleven District Supervisors sworn in on January 8 that year. Maxwell's District 10 constituency includes residents of Bay View, Hunters Point and other previously underrepresented communities. The election of district supervisors diffuses the power of the mayor's office and some say brings neighborhood issues to the fore of City politics. The other view is that district elections create a board that pits supervisor against supervisor at the expense of Citywide concerns.

Detail: District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin succeeded Matt Gonzalez as president of the Board of Supervisors on Saturday, January 8, 2005.
