New and Venerable Institutions: Palms

Canary Island Date Palms at Union Square.
With Market Street beautification and the remodeling of Union Square and Ferry Plaza, everything's coming up Palm Trees in San Francisco. They arrive resembling Marge Simpson, with fronds tied up high. Tree specialists truss each palm using twine from an organic material that breaks when the tree has rooted and the fronds are strong. Some locals think they're too L.A.ish, but the palms thrive in our climate. Like San Franciscans, they've put down roots and let their hair down.
