The
refined-but-genuine Fillmore shopping district and the rich cultural
traditions of bordering Japantown combine in an eclectic experience
for both local and out-of-town visitors here. A relatively new neighborhood,
Japantown was known only as a tiny Japanese colony in the late 1950s.
Much of the architecture here was built the following decade as part
of a scandalous redevelopment project that devasted San Francisco's
black community and jazz culture. |
