Farewell Favorites: Star Bakery

1701 Church Street at 29th
Before it closed in the spring of 1998, Star Bakery on Church Street and 29th in Noe Valley was the oldest continuously operating bakery in San Francisco. The bakery closed down after two years and a few months under the direction of it's most recent owner, Laura Catapano. Catapano cited the lack of parking and foot traffic in the neighborhood among reasons for closing down. Star Bakery, an institution famous for its Irish soda bread, catered to neighborhood customers and visitors from nearby St. Paul's Church for 99 years.
