Farewell Favorites: M&M Tavern

The Chieftain Irish bar occupies the old M&M Tavern location, 198 Fifth Street, in June, 2004.

In October 2000, the M&M Tavern at 5th and Howard closed its doors after 66 years. So entrenched was this saloon in the City's newspaper culture that the Examiner once had a direct line from its newsroom to the bar. This was the place where drivers, printers, writers, editors, and messengers all mingled in a spirit typical of the City's camaraderie across social lines. Always filled with smoke in the old days and gamblers in the even older days, the joint was founded by Martin McVeigh and Mike Malloy shortly after prohibition was lifted in 1934.
