Farewell Favorites: Gold Spike

Gold Spike, 527 Columbus Avenue.

With its perfect location in the vibrant center of North Beach, the Gold Spike was a haven for much local clutter, er color, that's it, for many decades. Big food and walls lined with business cards from patrons all over the world were hallmarks of the Gold Spike, which closed in February, 2006 following a dispute between owner Paul Mechetti and his landlord over retrofitting and repairs. Originally known as the Columbus Candy Store and Soda Fountain, the Gold Spike was founded by Mechetti's grandparents in 1920.
