Farewell Favorites: Carville

This house at 1632 Great Highway is among the last surviving structures of a once vibrant community known as Carville. In the 1890s, after cable cars made horse drawn streetcars obsolete, the cars were discarded along the dunes of the Sunset District. By 1908, more than 2,000 San Franciscans lived in homes that were built from converted streetcars. Most were destroyed less than ten years later. The second story of #1632 is built around two of these discarded cars.
