San Francisco in Cinema: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Hank Donat and George Takei at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center, 1840 Sutter Street. Takei appeared at the Center on behalf of Tom Ammiano for Mayor in 2003.
Captain Kirk and crew took the bus in the 1986 installment of the Star Trek epic, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Traveling through galaxies where no one had gone before must have been good practice for hurtling over the hills of San Francisco on MUNI like these commuters on the 41 Union. The City appears in several cameos throughout the Star Trek saga, as it's the Starfleet Headquarters for centuries to come. In Voyage Home, Mr. Spock demonstrates the Vulcan manner of quieting a rowdy punk on public transportation. Directed by Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, this entry plays as comic relief among the Star Trek movies and TV shows. Starring veteran Starfleet officers William Shatner, Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and Nichelle Nichols as Uhura.
