Dustin Hoffman
stars as comedian, filth monger, muckraker, and free speech activist Lenny
Bruce in director Bob Fosse's compelling 1974 documentary-style feature
Lenny.
Valerie Perrine is Bruce's wife-muse-drug buddy, Honey, who provides details
of her husband's rise and fall in mock interview segments. Lenny's first
major performance was here at 440 Broadway, which in 1958 was a popular
joint called Ann's 440 Club, run by New York cabaret singer Ann Dee. Bruce
went on to cult status as the cultural hero who was arrested dozens of
times - sometimes on-stage - and targeted by police not only for his toilet
humor, but for his political material as well. Lenny died of a heroin overdose
in Los Angeles in 1966.
