San Francisco in Cinema: The Maltese Falcon
Sam Spade's partner, Miles Archer, is shot to death on Bush Street over the Stockton Tunnel dig at the outset of The Maltese Falcon. The 1941 detective story, starring Humphrey Bogart as Spade, features Tenderloin locations and outstanding performances by Peter Lorre, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. This cinema classic based on the Dashiell Hammett novel was the directorial debut of John Huston. It's a great classic and a cinematic record of one of the City's most important literary works.
