San Francisco in Cinema: All About Eve

445 Geary Street
The Curran Theatre helps Geary Street masquerade as Broadway, New York in Joseph Mankiewicz's 1950 classic All About Eve. Bette Davis chews the scenery as the aging star whose life is taken over by schemer Anne Baxter. Also stars Gary Merrill, George Sanders, and Celeste Holm. All About Eve won six Oscars and is routinely included on lists of the best films of all time. Features the immortal line from rapier newspaper columnist Addison DeWitt, played by George Sanders, "San Francisco, an oasis of civilization in the California desert. Tell me, do you share my high opinion of San Francisco?" Eve's treachery may have gone unnoticed had DeWitt not caught her in a particular lie, "San Francisco has no Shubert Theatre. You've never been to San Francisco. That was a stupid lie, easy to expose, beneath you!"
