True to its roots,
Cafe Vesuvio, the North Beach institution on Columbus Avenue, portrays
a beat coffeehouse named Roads in So I Married an Axe Murderer.
The 1993 comedy stars Mike Myers as a poet who falls in love with Nancy
Travis whose character may be a fugitive serial killer. It's fun to spot
locations including the Palace of Fine Arts and SOMA in this odd movie
that harks back to the John Hughes films of the '80s yet also foreshadows
later, larger Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy comedies. Directed by Thomas
Schlamme, So I Married an Axe Murder also stars Brenda Fricker and Anothony
La Paglia and features local performers such as Cintra Wilson and Bob Sarlatte.
