San Francisco Commemorates
Earthquake and Fire of 1906

San Franciscans including 104 year-old earthquake survivor Herbert Hamrol, Mayor Gavin Newsom, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes White and Police Chief Heather Fong, and up to 500 devotees marked the 101st anniversary of the Earthquake and Fire that nearly destroyed the City in 1906. A ceremonial wreath was placed on Lotta's Fountain, where locals gather annually to remember the disaster, honor the dead, and to celebrate the City's resilience. Fire horns sounded the anniversary at 5:12 a.m.
